Mothers' Union

Mothers’ Union is a women-led, international Christian movement dedicated to ending poverty, violence and social injustice in communities in the UK and around the world.
2026 is our 150th Anniversary year! With over 4 million members in approximately 84 countries, we work with people of all faiths and none, transforming lives, strengthening families and communities, and advocating for meaningful change.
Rooted in kindness, faith and compassionate action, we strive to create a better future where everyone has the opportunity and resources to thrive.
We have a small group at St Matthew’s, who meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 1.00pm in the Parish Rooms. We share a simple lunch together, and then have worship, a discussion or a speaker, and news on subjects relevant to Mothers’ Union around the world. This may be on topics such as literacy and development, ending gender-based violence, or offering holidays to less fortunate families in the UK. All are welcome to join us at these meetings.
Members are active in parish life, and are involved with worship and fundraising for both the parish and Mothers’ Union. They are also active across the diocese, being involved in different diocesan MU projects such as prayers in the Harvard Chapel in Southwark Cathedral every month, knitting, and supporting chaplains at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Membership is open to all, as long as they have been baptised and support the Aims and Objects of the organisation.
